TSUCHI NO YADO - OKINAWA, JAPAN
Tsuchi No Yado Okinawa was set up by Hiroko in 1984 as a guest house catering for people with or without disabilities, shortly after she decided to make the blue watered islands of Okinawa her home.

She choose Iejima because it was from here that many people had been campaigning for a base and military free Okinawa as they had experienced first hand the horrors of the battles of WWII. Next door to the Yado is a museum started by Awagon Shoukou which reminds people of the human face of war and the preciousness of all life.

The Yado is very affordable and set up on a shared facilities basis with a community kitchen and male and female dormitories which encourages plenty of interaction with other guests. This provides an opportunity for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to learn, reflect and talk with each on the Issues of peace, disability and what real human care and support is.

Hiroko feels that the Okinawan people (traditionally Ryukyu culture) have a special heart and kindness and can inspire the world to be a more caring and peaceful place.  Music, dance and song are a big part of people’s lives. The three stringed “sanshin” is particularly popular and reflects the Okinawans  love of celebration and sharing no matter what challenges may be facing them.

With a disability or not
With money or not
Whatever your skin colour
It doesn’t matter- you are welcome here!
If only for a short time you can feel peace and calm
Or you discover something precious you can take home with you
That’s wonderful!
Okinawa surely has something special to give you.
