PROJECT NEWS - PEACE ON WHEELS
March 2006
  • 5th  Attended community event to protest the plan to move one of the US Bases to Henako Bay in northern Okinawa.





  • 7th  Attended special meeting at the Okinawa Prefectural Government Office to discuss the effects of new law regarding disability, independence and support. Hiroko was one of many representatives to express how the new law would impact on their lives.

  • 18th Attended a  study group on peace with theme of , "Mutual concession and mutual help" at 'Wabiai no Sato', Ie Jima.

  • 22th Attended a "Team Okinawa" study group on the new disability and independence support law.

April 2006
  • 24th - 4th May  Travel to Australia Tsuchi no Yado to take part in the "Celebrating Peace in our lives " event.

  • 7th - 14th  Solo Painting Exhibition "Peace on Wheels" in Tochigi City

  • 31st Aug - 13th Sept   Travel to Argentina to meet members of Okinawa Prefecture Association and Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (AMFPA) .









  • 16th - 21th Meetings in preparation for upcoming painting exhibition in Matsushiro, Nagano.

October 2006
  • 22th Sep  - 4th Oct Travel to Australia for Tsuchi No Yado administrative and staff matters.  Filming  for "Manabiya" theme of documentary.

  • 2th Oct An exhibition of Hiroko's paintings at Sydney Town Hall as part of Bhavan Austrlia's Cultural and Art event for peace.


  • 12th - 14th Attended "World Uchinanchu festival" in Naha, Okinawa  -  Reunion of Okinawan community living abroad.
  • 15th - 31st Filming in Iejima and preparation for November exhibition and filming

November 2006
  • 1st - 14th Painting exhibition "I love kempo"  (I love  the {peace} constitution ) by Hiroko Kimura and Bakurou Mori in Matsushiro city, Nagano at Gallery "Zouan".
    Matsushiro was chosen for the exhibition and as a place to reflect on peace because of the town's history and WWII Imperial headquarter ruins which have been preserved as a reminder of the human cost of war.









  • 3rd Nov - Talk by Hiroko Kimura and Bakurou Mori Theme " Are the Japanese really going to throw away their peace constitution?"



  • 15th - 30th Nov
    Traveled to Osaka, visited PEACE CLUB where people with disablities and abilities work and live together.



    Traveled to Kobe to meet with disabled friends and visit their living and working spaces at KINTON cafe.



    Traveled to Yamaguchi Prefecture to explore the early years of Hiroko's life. Visited her old home, old friends and old site of Tsuchi No Yado in Hagi.









    Travelled to Hiroshima Dome and Peace Park.




 Dec 2006 to Feb 2007  
  • Break from filming. Hiroko returns to Iejima to focus on painting.

March 2007    
  • 9th - 12th  (Miyakojima) Travelled to Miyakojima Okinawa for caring seminar for elderly, presented by Mr Aoyama.
    (Mr Aoyama has developed and teaches lifting and transfer techniques influenced by his martial arts training)




  • Interveiwed Asako san (an original staff member at 'Tsuchi No Yado' Okinawa) and Yoshiro san.



  • 17th (Iejima peace study) Attended  2007 study group on peace with theme of, "Mutual concession and mutual help" organzied by 'Wabiai no Sato', Ie Jima.




  • 19th -  3 April (Australia) Traveled to Australia Tsuchi No Yado with Hiroko's family.



  • 21st (Novita talk) Hiroko gave a talk at Novita children's services for parents with cerebral palsy.





  • 20th - 31st (Interviewed various) Interviewed various people in regards to disability, caring and Tsuchi No Yado.






April 2007     
  • 3rd - 10th Travelled to Kyushu, Hiroshima and Kyoto and interviewed various people relating to Hiroko's early life in the Beppu Institution and Tsuchi No Kai and Tsuchi No Yado, Yamaguchi.










  • 11th - 13th Travelled to Nagoya and visited Nanohanaen Home for the elderly in Okazaki where Hiroko felt the philosophy of care was close to her understanding.

May 2007
  • 28th April - 6th May Attended 10th General Assembly of the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists Worldwide celebrating 50 years of activity.
    Attended by 114 full and associate members from over 37 countries, their carers and guests, board members, publishers and event organisers.



  • 30th April Celebratory Meeting for Members at the Vienna Hofburg former Imperial residences





  • 30th April Opening of VDMFK Exhibition at Albertina- Basteihalle featuring over 250 works of art. Live demonstrations.





  • 2nd - 3rd May General Assembly of Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists Worldwide to discuss membership, administrational matters and the future direction of VDMFK.







  • 1st - 4th May Members and guests were treated to a number of superb events and outings that showcased the rich cultural history of Vienna. Visits included a cruise down the Danube, meals in grand palaces and residences such as the Schonbrunn Palace and the Albertina staterooms. The grand finale at the Vienna Concert Hall featured a performance by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.

  • 17th May - 21 June    Break from filming in Okinawa

June 2007
  • 23 June Battle of Okinawa Memorial Day (Irei no hi) Attended one of the many events held in Okinawa to honour those who died during the Battle of Okinawa in WWII . The battled ended on 23 June 1945.
    Hiroko has often attended the  "International anti war in Okinawa gathering" held each year at the Konpaku no To - a memorial where an estimated 35,000 unknown victims  were originally buried.
    This year the event featured a program of peace activitists, school children, academics, musicians, politicians and local figures all working for peace and a base free Okinawa.





  • 23 June Hiroko visits the Peace Memorial Park in Itoman city and the cornerstone of peace memorial which has inscribed the names of more than 240,000 Okinawan, Japanese, American, Korean and citizens of other countries who were either killed as soldiers or as civilians during the Battle of Okinawa.



  • 26-28 June Filming and interviews in Iejima and Okinawa main Island. Visit to Wabiai No Sato, a museum based around the work of peace activist Shoko Aargon who was one of the inspirations for  Hiroko to set up Tsuchi no Yado on Iejima. 



  • 28 June - 2 July  Travel to Yamagata to visit and film one of Hiroko's past long term carers.

It has been a long journey making this documentary and finally
"Peace on Wheels - IKIRU (To Live)" has been born.
We are grateful to all the people who have supported us on this journey.
